Position: Anticipated Full-Time, Certified School Nurse

Qualifications: Registered professional nurse currently registered with a Professional Educator License (PEL) endorsed for school support servicers in school nursing. Certification for CPR, First Aid, and Vision and Hearing Screening.

Reports to: Administrator and/or Assistant Superintendent of Learning

Performance Responsibilities:
To coordinate a school health program including the delivery of Services to students and staff members in order to enhance health and wellness in the school community. Duties are to be performed in accordance with standards of professional school Nurse practice, district/state board of education policies and procedures, and Illinois State law regarding nurse practice.

The Employee shall be responsible for the following duties which include, but are not limited to:
– Plan and supervise the obtaining of required physical and dental examinations and immunizations.
– Make arrangements for, supervise and follow up on physical assessment programs including, but not limited to, vision and hearing screenings and physical examinations when provided by the school (i.e., sports physicals).
– Obtain health and pertinent medical reports for case study evaluations.
– Participate in interdisciplinary staffing’s, TAT meetings (as needed), and the social emotional learning team.
– Assist in obtaining and interpreting medical reports that are needed to adapt a child’s education program.
– Collaborate with other professionals in recommending physical adaptations as necessary for individual needs.
– Provide for the maintenance of complete and accurate health records and documentation of health services (i.e., physical examinations, hearing and vision results) for all students.
– Actively collaborate with the school administration to formulate policies and procedures for the prevention and control of communicable disease in conformity with State law and local health department recommendations. Provide for the implementation and enforcement of communicable disease policies and procedures.
– Plan and supervise the safe and effective administration of medication needed to maintain the child in school in cooperation with school/district administrators.
– Collaborate with the school staff in establishing policies and procedures for providing emergency care for illness and/or injury occurring while the student is under jurisdiction of the school.
– Observe school environments, review accident reports and evaluate safety procedures in order to alert appropriate school personnel when to correct hazardous conditions or procedures.
– Collaborate with all members of the school staff in identifying students who may be abused and/or neglected by providing information on signs and symptoms, interviewing and examining injured students, keeping accurate records and cooperating in established hot line procedures.
– Maintain current student medical needs list and distribute such information as needed.
– Exhibits computer literacy and competency in use of existing technology.
– Maintains a user-friendly and organized health services facility conducive to confidential communication and services.
– Develops and maintains current health care/emergency plans for students who need special interventions during the school day.

Health Education and Counseling:
– Consult with parents, school personnel and pupils to understand their personal health needs and facilitate reasonable adjustments to assist with any physical, mental and/or social limitation.
– Assist families and staff to find and use available health and community resources.
– Utilize each opportunity to present health information to students, teachers and parents in the process of providing health services.
– Participate in the total health education program by acting as a consultant and resource and participating in classroom programs.
– Compile and maintain a file of current health education materials for students and faculty.
– Provide in-service programs on appropriate health topics to parents, teachers, and staff.
– Stress the concept of prevention of diseases and promotion of wellness in all activities.

Administrative and Professional Responsibilities:
– Actively contribute as a member of the Child Study Team, Special Education Emotional Learning Team and Special Education Department.
– Act as liaison between school, student, parents, physician and community agencies regarding the pupil’s health status, in accordance with all state and federal legal guidelines.
– Participate in the formulation, evaluation and periodic review and revision of objectives, standards, policies and functions of school nurse services and the total school health program.
– Alert school administration and others to legal provisions and health trends as they pertain to school health and policies and procedures.
– Participate in activities of professional nursing, health and educational organizations.
– Continue to pursue educational studies to maintain and improve the professional level of performance.
– Supervise and instruct available and assigned personnel (i.e., health aides).
– Provide and/or delegate direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness and emergency care to students and staff including assessment, identification of health needs, making referrals for diagnosis and treatment, recommending educational modifications, providing follow-up and evaluation, and maintaining appropriate documentation.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and arms to reach. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk and occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Terms of Employment:
Ten-month salaried employee. Salary to be established by the Board and/or appropriate collective bargaining agreement, if applicable. A fingerprint-based criminal background check is required for hire and employment with the District is contingent upon the results.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with applicable State and local laws, board policies, and the provisions of the evaluation plan for licensed staff.
