Job Description: The nurse employs primary prevention by providing health education that promotes physical and mental health and informs healthcare decisions, prevents disease, and enhances school performance. Addressing such topics as healthy lifestyles, risk-reducing behaviors, developmental needs, activities of daily living, and preventive self-care, and the nurse uses teaching methods that are appropriate to the student’s developmental level, learning needs, readiness, and ability to learn. Screenings, referrals, and follow-up are secondary prevention strategies that nurses utilize to detect and treat health-related issues in their early stage (NASN, 2016a). Nurses provide additional prevention by addressing diagnosed health conditions and concerns.

Reports to: School Principal/Asst. Principal and Director of Special Education

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and/or Education
  • Minimum of three years experience as a Nurse (RN), preferably in a school setting
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of current technology and related software applications
  • Knowledge of child development
  • Knowledge of the characteristics of healthy children
  • Knowledge of physical and immunization requirements for students in the State of Illinois
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Self-starter/Self motivated
  • Works well independently and on a team
  • Culturally competent
  • Must meet deadlines
  • Good customer service
  • Must foster and maintain positive and effective working relationships
  • Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • BLS/CPR certified
  • IDPH vision and hearing certified

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Nurse
  • Fluent in Spanish

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Confidentiality
  • Maintains knowledge of laws, regulations, and best practices in health education
  • Ensures compliance with physicals, immunizations, and state health requirements
  • Participates in professional development and networking conferences and events
  • Provides guidance and resources to all district administrators concerning student health and wellness
  • Responsible for listening to parent, student, and employee concerns related to health and wellness
  • Provides emergency service and first aid for injured or ill student’s grades (K-8) in a school setting
  • Responsible for the updating and maintaining student health records
  • Conduct student health screenings as required, needed, and/or requested
  • Completes accident reports
  • Participates in student’s Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) by conducting parent interviews to complete health assessments for initial, annual and three year re-evaluations

 

Physical Demands:

  • Sitting for long periods of time;  some extensive walking;  light lifting; working on the computer for extended periods of time
