Position Title: Certified School Nurse
Department: Student Services
Reports To: Division Chair for Counseling and Student Support Services
Position Summary: Coordinates a comprehensive school health program, including the delivery of services to students and staff members in order to enhance health and wellness in the school
community. Duties are to be performed in accordance with standards of professional school nurse practice.

• Illinois PEL endorsed in School Nursing
• Bachelor’s Degree
• First Aid and CPR Program Completion
• Illinois Certification in Vision and Hearing Screening Technician
• Computer literacy and competency in use of existing technology
• Prior professional nursing experience, preferably pediatric, adolescent, community or mental health nursing, and health program management.

Responsibilities and Expectations:
• Works collaboratively with health care providers, students, parents, school district staff and community agencies to ensure access and continuity of care for students.
• Assists in the establishment and maintenance of a comprehensive school health program, including providing health information to students, parents, staff and community.
• Establishes an accident/injury prevention program to facilitate school safety.
• Establishes a communicable disease prevention and control program in cooperation with local and state public health agencies.
• Manages school health records in accordance with the Illinois School Student Records Act, providing efficient retrieval of information and other related archival responsibilities.
• Adheres to District policies and procedures, professional expectations, and related duties as outlined in the Board of Education policies, the Professional Appraisal System, and the Negotiated Agreement.
• Models daily behavior that creates a climate for mutual respect and responsibility in the health office.
• Participates as a resource in health issues, including staff in-service programs on health topics.
• Serves when requested on department, division, campus, school, and District committees.
• Other responsibilities as assigned by the Division Chair and/or building/District administrative staff.

Clinical Practice:
• Provides and/or delegates direct professional nursing services, including assessment, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students and staff; supervises and provides vision and hearing screening; provides follow-up and evaluation; maintains appropriate documentation.
• Develops a medication protocol to safely store, administer, document, and monitor the effectiveness of medication given at school.
• Maintains accurate medical records to assure compliance with state mandates, including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions.
• Participates as crisis team member and provides crisis intervention for students and staff in the event of sudden illness or injury.
• Makes appropriate assessments and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter.

Health Office Management:
• Maintains a user-friendly and organized health services facility conducive to confidential communication and services.
• Purchases and maintains health and OSHA supplies and equipment as needed.
• Manages and makes recommendations for the health services annual budget and critical needs requests.

Communication:
• Maintains communication with administrators, teachers, other school personnel, parents/guardians, community health agencies, and the private medical sector to enhance cooperative action, which will meet the health and safety needs of students.
• Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.

Special Education:
• Member of the multidisciplinary team responsible for the identification, evaluation, and placement of students in special education. Identifies health related barriers to learning.
• Recommends modifications of the school program for students who require accommodations due to a health deficit.
• Develops and maintains individual health care plans for students with complex health care needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Paraeducators, non-certified registered nurses working in the school, health aides, clerical assistants, and health services volunteers, if assigned.
